V60 Filter Coffee: A Step-by-Step Guide

The V60 is one of the most popular pour-over methods among filter coffee lovers worldwide. Its conical shape and single wide hole at the base let water pass through the coffee bed quickly and evenly, helping clean, complex aromas come forward in the cup.

Before you start, get the ratio right: the general rule is 1 gram of coffee to 15-16 grams of water. For a 250ml cup, about 15-16 grams of medium-fine ground coffee is enough. Rinsing the paper filter with hot water before adding coffee removes any paper taste and preheats the dripper.

After adding the ground coffee, level the bed gently and reset your scale to zero. The first stage is 'blooming' — pour roughly twice the coffee's weight in water (for 15g of coffee, 30-45ml) in slow circular motions, then wait 30-45 seconds. This lets the carbon dioxide trapped inside the beans escape, so the coffee opens up more evenly.

After the bloom, add the remaining water in a few stages, pouring in slow circles near the center. Keep the water level from getting too close to the filter's rim, and keep your pour steady. Total brew time usually lands between 2.5 and 3.5 minutes, depending on your grind size and pour speed.

If your cup tastes too sharp or sour, try a finer grind; if it tastes overly bitter and dry, go coarser. That's the beauty of the V60 — small adjustments let you dial in endless variations to match your own taste.

Don't expect perfection on your first few tries — V60 technique improves with practice. Experimenting with Kimor's single-origin beans is a good way to discover your own ideal ratio and pour rhythm.
